Howdy! is: Sean Hancock: (Mandolin/Vox) David Nanstad: (Guitar,Harmonica,Vox) Aspen Stevenson: (Upright Bass/Vox) Chris Erbacher (Banjo/Pedal Steel) PJ Medina (Drums/Percussion)
Howdy!s version of gothic-backwoods-mountain music continues to gain attention from the Bay Area Americana community with each show out shining the last. Recent shows at the Café DuNord and Connecticut Yankee left the audience spellbound, sweaty and yelling for more. While self described as Americana, Howdy!s music is actually a little more difficult to categorize – the music can run the gamut from traditional bluegrass inspired to Grateful Dead inspired jams…soaked in moonshine…with a little rooster claw thrown in to keep it real. The band manages to tastefully alter acoustic guitar, mandolin, banjo and pedal steel with cannabis inspired effects over driving jungle drums and upright bass….saying you can dance to it (most do) is an understatement. All this and wailing voodoo vocals and harmonica. In Howdy! songs lycanthropic lovers are decried; victims of civil war fratricide exact revenge and mythical figures weave battles for your dreams. Revelers at Howdy! shows have been heard to exclaim “..they cast out devils and speak with new tongues!”. . T
The band is Dave singing and playing acoustic guitar and harmonica, Sean playing mandolin and singing, and Aspen playing upright bass and doing some singing too. Chris Erbacher has joined Howdy! on Banjo/Pedal Steel and PJ Medina has come in on drums. We realized we all liked the darker, stranger side of roots music, so we thought we’d steal a few pages from that book and fill in the rest ourselves. We hope you like it ‘cause we like doing it…we realeased our first album called Stranger in 2006 and its available on the Merchandise page.
